For the purpose of this catalog, an Organized Research Unit (ORU) is any group of researchers who work together under a common umbrella. An ORU can be an institute, a center, or a program within a center. It can also be a department or a group of people in a department who work collaboratively in a particular area.

The Office of Research and Engagement has compiled this catalog to help promote the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as a premier research institution. The catalog can be used to advertise particular programs, to identify and encourage collaboration among researchers, scholars, and students within UT and at other universities, and provide assistance in seeking funding.

The research capacity of the UT campus is vibrant and active; this research capacity catalog will reflect ongoing and new research talents and areas as a dynamic web document. As more ORUs are created, they will be added. We encourage every ORU on campus to update (edit) their material at any time. If your research unit is not represented here, please draft a research statement for the unit, using the format of those included herein. Send all updates and new entries to Erin Chapin at for inclusion on this website.
